2009 Fantasy Football Draft Kit
|
|
|
Bargains
- These can be either well-known, established fantasy
players who are projected to do much better than their
2008 statistics or players who broke out last season
and could be the new fantasy football studs. Basically
you can get these players at a lower draft price than
their value will actually be (bargains).
Breakouts
- Most true sleepers fall under this category. They
have shown potential in the past and this may be their
year to breakout and become a fantasy star.
Rookies
- These are first year players who could start for
your team and be star. |

Bargains: Quarterbacks
|
| Carson Palmer
- Bengals - Palmer is the
same quarterback who has averaged just over 4,000 yards
passing and 28 touchdown passes from 2005-2007. That is
as good as it gets in fantasy football. He looks to be
100% recovered from his 2008 injuries so the only thing
to hold him back is his own team. The Bengals added 6th
overall pick OT Andre Smith to the offense and they replaced
T.J. Houshmandzadeh with free agent Laveranues Coles.
The Bengals should have solid depth with WR Chris Henry
and 2008 third-round-pick WR Andre Caldwell. The lackluster
run game will feature Cedric Benson, so the Bengals will
be forced to pass more than they truly want too. |
| Matt Schaub -
Texans - He had solid numbers
in 2008 with just 11 starts: 3,043 yards with 15 touchdown
passes. If he can remains healthy for more of the season
Schaub should pass for over 4,000 yards and 20-25 touchdown
passes. He has Andre Johnson, Kevin Walters and Owen Daniels
to throw to and a pretty good run game lead by Steve Slaton.
In all, a healthier Schaub can finish in the top 5, but
you better draft a solid back up. |
| Eli Manning -
Giants - Year-after-year he
falls in the draft and year-after-year he puts up good
fantasy numbers: 3,238 yards, 21 TD's, 10 Int. The Giants
have a lot of good young receivers and Eli should be set
for another underrated fantasy season. |
| Trent Edwards
- Bills - Edwards had a mini-breakout
in 2009 throwing for 2,699 yards and 11 touchdowns while
missing most of three games. Coming into his third season
Edwards should be giving some more slack in his leash
and that should produce bigger numbers. Terrell Owens
provides the desperately needed 2nd-opition behind Lee
Evans. You put Josh Reed into a more comfortable third
receiver role and you have the makings of a very solid
passing offense. |
|
Bargains: Wide Receivers
|
| Lee Evans - Bills
- He remains a bargain with the addition of Terrell Owens.
With a lot of attention on Owens, Evans should get a lot
of single coverage, and he is way too good for that. He
is likely going to be available at the end of the mid-rounds
and he should be a steady performer throughout the season
especially if Trent Edwards takes his expected step up. |
| Chad Ochocinco
- Bengals - 2008 was a disaster
for the entire Bengal team and particularly Chad Johnson...Ochocinco.
WIth Palmer healthy and T.J. Houshmandzadeh gone it should
be back to normal, or close, for Ochocinco. Or maybe I
am sold on his talk with Denzel Washington. |
| Bernard Berrian
- Vikings - If Brett Favre
signs the already underrated receiver. should explode
in 2009. He caught 48 passes for 964 yards and 7 touchdowns
in 2008 while missing two games. |
| Torry Holt -
Jaguars - The one-time fantasy
stud has slipped, but nothing like an new team to invigorate
the competitive spirit of Holt. At worst a healthy Holt
is a 60 catch, 800 yard receiver at best he is a 80 catch
1,100 yards receiver. Either way you should be able to
draft him at a bargain price. |
| Steve Smith -
Giants - Smith makes a bargain
in PPR (points per reception) leagues. He finished with
57 receptions for 574 yards and 1 touchdown in 2008. He
could get 70-80 catches in 2009. |
| Chansi Stuckey
- Jets - With the departure
of Laveranues Coles, Stuckey has a good chance to break
into the starting line up, the question will be who will
throw the ball to him. If the Jets can get good quarterback
play, Stuckey makes a late, late round bargain. |
|
Bargains: Running Backs
|
| Correll Buckhalter
- Broncos - He comes into
the 2009 season expected to carry a share of the running
load with rookie #1 pick Knowshon Moreno and that should
at least put him on your fantasy radar. Buckhalter can
catch passes and should provide solid fantasy numbers
from time-to-time and if Knowshon Moreno fails or goes
down to injury, Buckhalter could do very well. |
| Jamaal Charles
- Chiefs - The rookie 3rd-round-draft
pick played well filling in for Larry Johnson and Kolby
Smith finishing with 357 yards @ 5.3 yards per rush. He
added 27 receptions for another 272 yards. He could be
part of a two-back attack in Kansas City. |
|
Bargains: Tight Ends
|
| Owen Daniels - Texans
- He had his breakout season in 2008 catching 70 passes
for 862 yards and 2 touchdowns, yet he is likely to be
ignored as the first tight ends get drafted. He has the
potential to easily finish in the top five. |
| Zach Miller - Raiders
- Just like Daniels, he had his breakout season in 2008
catching 56 passes for 778 yards and 1 touchdown, yet
he too is likely to be ignored as the first tight ends
get drafted. His potential is tied to his quarterbacks's
success, but he is Russell's #1 target. |
| John Carlson - Seahawks
- The rookie 2nd-round-pick was excellent from day one
catching 55 passes for 627 yards and 5 touchdowns. There
is no reason that he shouldn't take another step in 2009. |
| Bo Scaife - Titans
- He took over as the featured tight end and even the
featured receiver at times and finished with 58 catches
for 561 yards. He is a late-round bargain who will fill
the hole at tight end just fine. |
