2008 Fantasy Football Draft Kit
|
|
|
|
Breakouts: Quarterbacks
|
| Aaron
Rodgers - Packers - The 2005 #1 pick out California
only played in two games in 2007 backing up Brett Farve
and only one meaningful one, which was against the Dallas
Cowboys. He went 18 for 26 for 216 yards, 1 touchdown
and 0 interceptions. More importantly the Packers have
rebuilt an excellent team around him. Great young receivers
Gregg Jennings, James Jones, #2 draft pick Jordy Nelson
and veteran Donald Driver to go along with a very good
offensive line and running back Ryan Grant. The pieces
are their for Rodgers to be quality fantasy quarterback
and a very cheap draft price. |
| Matt Leinart - Cardinals
- He seemed to be on the road to stardom before slumping
and then being injured. Kurt Warner filled in and played
very well and has a chance to be the starter. But if Leinart
does start, it means he could do as good and potentially
better than Warner's 2007 numbers. With 2 big-time receivers
to throw to (Fitzgerald and Boldin) any Cardinal quarterback
can come up big in 2008. |
| Trent Edwards - Bills
- In 2007 he took over for J.P. Losman and played
solid football. He is a very accurate passer, but needs
to expand his deep game and take advantage of WR Lee Evans.
He is likely no better than a back-up in 2008, but you
never know the next Romo or Anderson is going to come
from. |
| Drew Stanton
- Lions - Pure gambling here.
The Lions have great receivers and Kitna is slowly taking
the steps into a veteran back-up role, though he is probably
a year away. The 2007 second-round draft pick from Michigan
could get a shot if Kitna fails or goes down with injury. |
| JaMarcus Russell -
Raiders - We know Russell has talent, but can he
perform up to fantasy standards in 2008? Probably not,
but with his talent he is worth a late-round gamble. |
| J.T. O'Sullivan
- 49ers - Sometimes a sleeper
is just a late-round gamble. After 2007 there is little
to get excited about with the 49ers. With that said, O'Sullivan
beat out the former #1 overall pick Alex Smith and with
Isaac Bruce, Bryant Johnson and Vernon Davis as targets
in a Mike Martz offense, you never know what could happen. |
|
Breakouts: Wide Receivers
|
| Calvin Johnson
- Lions - Obvious, but by
definition Johnson is set to have a breakout 2008 season.
Having Roy Williams on the other side takes some shine
off his potential stats, but in 2008 Johnson just make
take over as the #1 target in Detroit. |
| Justin Gage -
Titans - He came on strong
in the second half of the season for Tennessee. At 6-4
he potential makes a great end zone target. If Vince Young
takes the next step as a QB, Gage will likely take the
step with him. |
| Bryant Johnson
- 49ers - The former #1 draft
pick is finally out of the shadows cast by Fitzgerald
and Boldin. He is now the #1 man in San Francisco. He
should at least be a fantasy back-up, but if Alex Smiths
blossoms (big if) Johnson could be a star. |
| D.J. Hackett
- Panthers - Was set for a
breakout season in 2007, but injuries plagued him. His
prone to injury is a concern in 2008, but if he remains
healthy and Jake Delhomme returns as a legitimate fantasy
quarterback, Hackett could shine. |
Jabar Gaffney
- Patriots - He is a very
underrated possession receiver, before last season. With
the departure of Stallworth, Gaffney may now be the patriots
3rd receiver, which in New England can turn up big stats.
He will do better in points per receptions leagues. |
| Donte' Stallworth
- Browns - His move to the
Browns gives him a chance to get some more looks, even
though Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow will see most
of the action. Bottom line is the Browns have a big-time
offense and their second receiver should be a solid fantasy
play. |
| Sidney Rice -
Vikings - Played very well
as a rookie and would be higher rated if not for the signing
of Bernard Berrian. At the same time Berrian provides
cover for Rice and if Jackson can develop as quarterback,
Rice could be a solid back-up fantasy receiver. |
|
Breakouts: Running Backs
|
| Selvin Young
- Broncos - The job seems
to be his and his alone with the departure of Travis Henry
which could mean a 1,500 yards season. But then again,
Mike Shanahan probably has some unheard of free agent
who will pop up or the Broncos 5th-round pick Ryan Torain
will be a find or you have the worries of a mixed back
field that includes veteran Michael Pittman in the mix. |
| Michael Turner
- Falcons - No surprise here,
just a reminder that LaDainian Tomlinson's top-flight
back-up is now a starter in Atlanta |
