2009 Fantasy Football Draft Kit

Breakouts: Quarterbacks
|
| Note: There simply isn't a big list of
breakout quarterbacks coming into the 2009 season. JaMarcus
Russell could make the list, but we don't believe his
fantasy numbers will be worth starting fantasy quarterback
especially with few weapons to throw to at this time.
Other players like Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan actually broke
out as rookies. Therefore we have listed some backups
who if the veteran in front of them goes down could breakout
in 2009. *Denotes a non-starter. |
| Brady Quinn
- Browns - The collapse of
Derek Anderson and the entire Browns offense had one beneficial
result, Brady Quinn became the starting quarterback. The
former first-round draft pick (22nd overall) from Notre
Dame didn't exactly tear it up in his three starts, but
he did show the confidence and leadership it takes to
become a great NFL quarterback. The rest of the Brown
team is still in question. They lost Kellen Winslow in
a trade and Braylon Edwards 2008 bust leaves big questions
in the receiving corps. There is some help on the way
which includes #1 pick, center Alex Mack and two #2 pick
receivers, Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi. Taking
a late-round swing at Quinn could payoff in 2009. |
| Shaun Hill
- 49ers - He was a pleasant surprise at the end
of 2008 and finished with 2,046 yards and 13 touchdowns
against just 8 interceptions. You add 1st-round-pick Michael
Crab tree to the mix and Hill could give you a very solid
fantasy season at a very cheap draft price. |
| Matt Leinart*
- Cardinals - How long can
39 year-old Kurt Warner stay healthy? He is due to go
down at some point in 2009 and if it is season-ending,
Leinart could quickly become fantasy gold. He has had
the needed time to develop behind Warner and should be
primed for a big season if given the chance. |
| Seneca Wallace*
- Seahawks - He played great
behind Hasselbeck in 2008 throwing for 1,532 yards and
11 touchdowns against just 3 interceptions in 8 starts.
The 33 year-old Hasselbeck still has the tools to be a
good fantasy quarterback, but it is impossible to guess
which Hasselbeck you will get in 2009. |
| Byron Leftwich
- Buccaneers - He will be
in a fight with rookie #1 pick Josh Freeman to for the
starting spot, but if he wins Leftwich has shown the ability
to be a good NFL quarterback posting a 104.3 QB rating
for the Steelers in 2008. It is a long shot pick, but
see what happens in training camp with this situation. |
|
Breakouts: Wide Receivers
|
| Ted Ginn Jr.
- Dolphins - Some may say
he broke out in 2008, but 56 receptions for 790 yards
and two touchdowns isn't quite what he may be able to
do in 2009. The 9th overall pick of 2007 is just coming
into his potential and the Dolphins have potential to
improve a bit more on the offensive side in 2009 as well.
He should break the 1,000 yard mark and improve his touchdown
totals. Don't forget about his return statistics as well. |
| Donnie Avery
- Rams - Gone is the great
Torry Holt and Avery is his replacement. The second pick
of the second-round did not disappoint catching 53 passes
for 674 yards and 3 touchdowns as a rookie. Considering
the lackluster overall performance of the Rams offense,
that is pretty good. If the Rams get decent quarterback
play, Avery is a 1,000 yard receiver. |
| Mark Clayton
- Ravens - Coming into his
5th season, Clayton has never been a star nor has he been
a #1 draft pick bust. He has averaged 50 receptions for
659 yards over his short career that has been slowed by
poor quarterback play. With Joe Flacco at the helm, Clayton
may have finally found his quarterback and may finally
have his breakout 75 catch 1,100 yard season. |
| Miles Austin
- Cowboys - He had already
leap-frogged Patrick Crayton as the #2 receiver in 2008
before he sprained his ankle and fell out of favor. He
has a good chance to regain the #2 spot along side Roy
Williams and if he does his big-play ability could make
him a breakout in 2009. |
| Domenik Hixon
- Giants - A pleasant surprise
in late 2008 catching 30 passes in the last seven games
of the season. The 6-2, 25-year-old has the ability to
take the next step, but is far from a #1 receiver. He
may be good for a 60 catch 900 yard season and fulfill
your need for a third receiver or a nice backup. |
Devin Thomas
- Redskins - He will be given
the chance to start as Jim Zorn wants to move Antwaan
Randle El into the slot position and that could mean a
mini-breakout for the 2007 2nd-round-pick. |
| Mike Walker -
Jaguars - The rookie 3rd-round-pick
finished with just 16 receptions and 217 yards, but the
recent trading away of starter Dennis Northcutt indicates
the Jaguars believe that Walker can take over the #2 spot
along side free agent signee Torry Holt. Walker did have
six receptions for 107 yards against the Steelers before
he was injured and missed the next four games. |
| Mark Bradley
- Chiefs - The addition of
Matt Cassel at quarterback and the departure of tight
end Tony Gonzales opens the door for the former Bear 2005
2nd-round-pick. The midseason acquisition finished with
30 receptions for 380 yards and 3 touchdowns in 8 games.
He is penciled in to start along side Dwayne Bowe. |
| Josh Morgan -
49ers - If Shaun Hill can
take a step up and if the ancient Isaac Bruce should falter,
Morgan could put up some nice fantasy numbers. He finished
2008 with 20 catches for 319 yards and three touchdowns
in 12 games as a rookie. |
| Rashied Davis and/or
Earl Bennett - Bears
- The addition of Jay Cutler will make all receivers better
fantasy receivers in Chicago. If the Bears do not acquire
Brandon Marshall, one or both of these receivers could
breakout in 2009. Davis has the best chance of the two.
He started out hot in 2008, but went cold in the second
half finishing with 35 receptions for 445 yards and 2
touchdowns. Don't expect a #1 or #2 starter from these
long shot min-breakouts, but a last pick as a backup would
be a fair price. |
|
Breakouts: Running Backs
|
| Darren McFadden
- Raiders - After a so-so,
injury-plagued rookie debut, McFadden should return 100%
healthy and ready to show his true ability. He finished
with 499 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns and he catch 29
passes for 285 yards in 2008. He should top the 1,000
yard mark and catch 50 passes in 2009. |
| Pierre Thomas
- Saints - He came out of
nowhere when Reggie Bush went down and rushed for 667
yards, 9 touchdowns @ 4.8 ypc and he caught 31 passes
for 284 yards and 3 touchdowns. He is a perfect complement
to Bush and they should make a great duo in the high-octane
Saint offense. |
| Felix Jones
- Cowboys - He was on his
way to a breakout-rookie season when he went down to a
season-ending injury. The Cowboys have big plans for him
in 2009, including picking up some of the slack left by
the departure of T.O. He did average 8.9 yards a rush
in limited time in 2009. |
| Ahmad Bradshaw
- Giants - The departure of
Derrick Ward opens the door for Bradshaw to show his stuff
as the primary backup as well as the third-down back.
This could mean legitimate fantasy numbers for Bradshaw
in 2009. |
| Rashard Mendenhall
- Steelers - A bit of a long
shot until we see him in preseason, but Mendenhall was
drafted to replace Parker and he may have a shot to do
it in 2009 if he returns healthy. |
| Jerome Harrison
- Browns - He showed big play
ability by averaging 7.2 yards a carry in 2008. With the
veteran Jamal Lewis showing signs of overuse and age,
Harrison could be used a lot as a third-down-back as well
as some featured back carries. |
|
Breakouts: Tight Ends
|
| Greg Olsen -
Bears - Two words: Jay Cutler.
54 catches for 574 yards and 5 touchdowns with Kyle Orton. |
| Vernon Davis
- 49ers - Why not? If he can
stay healthy...a big if, he has the talent to be a star.
He is worth a late-round look. |
Brent Celek -
Eagles - Coming into his third
season, Celek has shown he can play the position well
and now will start with the departure of L.J. Smith. He
finished with 27 catches for 318 yards in 2008. |
