Round-by-Round Fantasy Football Draft
Analysis
(Rounds 1-3)
|
| Round One: Round-one went
in the exact order of the player rankings as it should
with the exception of Drew Brees going in front of Andre
Johnson. Both players are rated equal at a 9.5, so it
was team preference of getting a quarterback above a receiver. |
Round Two: The round began
with Marion Barber also going over Andre Johnson from
Team L again. Team L said, "It is nothing against
Johnson, But after selecting a quarterback with my first
pick I had to get a running back with my second pick and
thus I took Barber over Johnson.
Team K finally chose WR Andre Johnson and said, "If
he was gone I was going running back again, but I can't
pass up arguably the best receiver at this spot, especially
when I don't pick again for a long time.
Clinton Portis went next followed by wide receiver Calvin
Johnson to Team I. "Calvin Johnson may be the most
talented receiver on the board, but their are questions
about the Lions overall team play plus rookie quarterback
Matthew Stafford, but with over 1,300 yards and 12 TD's
in an 0-16 season, Johnson has nothing but upside to his
2009 value
The round continue to defy the conventional running back,
running back draft-strategy. In fact, not one team until
the end of the second-round went that route when Team
B selected Detroit Lions running back Kevin Smith. Team
B said, "I really was just drafting the best player
on the board, but I do like getting my starting running
backs settled within the first three rounds.
The high-risk, high-reward Ronnie Brown finished round-two.
Team A said, "I love Ronnie Brown in 2009. He is
100% healthy and the Dolphins are a much improved team.
I think Ricky Williams is solid, but will play much more
of a backup roll in 2009. 1,200 yards and 50 catches is
not impossible. |
Round Three: Atlanta Falcon
wide receiver Roddy White started off the round and Team
A said, "I was so tempted to grab a third running
back in Brian Westbrook or even Ryan Grant, but I already
have two running backs and even though it seems a little
high for Roddy White at this spot, I need my receiver.
Wide receiver Marques Colston went next followed by the
first tight end, Jason Witten of the Dallas Cowboys. Team
C said, "I have Maurice Jones-Drew and Randy Moss
so my choice was to either solidify my running backs by
getting Westbrook or Grant or dominate at tight end with
Witten and as you see I went the Witten route. I believe
the loss of Owens and a healthier Witten could mean big
things for him in 2009 and I can mark my tight end slot
as a win every week".
Brian Westbrook finally goes to team D at pick 28 and
he said, "I know Westbrook is a pain in the butt,
but at this spot he is well worth it."
A mini-run on running backs ensued with Ryan Grant and
Darren McFadden going followed by receiver Anquan Boldin.
Team H went for quarterback Philip Rivers with the 32nd
overall pick and said, "This was a tough pick, not
only because of Romo being available, but it seemed a
bit high for a second-tier quarterback. With that said,
I wouldn't be picking for quite some time and few great
fantasy quarterbacks are likely to be left by then, so
it was a pick based on my position. I think it is very
important to consider your draft position as well as the
player's draft value.
Running back Jonathan Stewart went next followed by quarterback
Tony Romo to Team J and he said, "Romo at this spot
in 2008 would have been great, but 2009 has some uncertainties.
The Cowboys will be doing a lot of two tight end sets
with a focus on running the ball, but this could lead
to a more efficient and confident Romo to counter less
pass being thrown, so in the end I think it is a wash
and he will remain a top fantasy quarterback.
Round three finished with the second tight end, Tony Gonzalez
followed by wide receiver Wes Wekler being selected. Team
K took Gonzales and he said, "I rate Gonzo right
there with Witten, so getting him eight picks later is
a a good deal to me". |
